6 Sri Lankan asylum seekers return from Australia

Another 6 Sri Lankan asylum seekers voluntarily return home from Australia A group of six Sri Lankan asylum seekers, who arrived in Australia illegally in boats, have opted to return home voluntarily. Accordingly, the Australian authorities have sent the group of 6 adult men back to Colombo Wednesday on a flight from Perth following their transfer from mainland detention sites, the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship said. A spokesman of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship said the men departed voluntarily. "They chose not to pursue their asylum claims and no longer seek to engage Australia's protection obligations," the spokesman said. "This is further proof that there is no advantage engaging with people smugglers," he added. The return of 6 asylum seekers to Colombo brings the total number of returns to 936 since the Australian government enacted new laws on August 13, 2012 to transfer irregular m...

Arrested Sri Lankan university students agreed to be rehabilitated - police

Sri Lanka police have said that the four arrested Jaffna University students, who are at a rehabilitation camp following their arrest, are undergoing rehabilitation on their own free will and they were not forced. Police Media Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prishantha Jayakody has told Ceylon Today that despite claims made by student unions and human rights movements, the four undergraduates agreed to be rehabilitated willingly, and were not forced by the police. SSP Jayakody has said that the students were placed under arrest as they had been involved in terrorism related activities. The police arrested 11 students of the Jaffna University last month on charges of supporting terrorist activities following the clash between university students and the security forces on November 27th when the students tried to commemorate the dead fighters of the former terrorist organization on its Heroes' Day (Mahaveer Day). Seven out of the 11 students taken i...

Visa delays leave foreign students stranded in UK for Christmas

Scores of international students have been stranded without passports and are unable to get home for Christmas after the UK Border Agency asked them to reapply for their visas. London School of Film students from as far afield as the US, India, Russia and Lebanon were asked to hand over their passports to the Border Agency in November so they could be issued with new study permits, following the decision to strip London Metropolitan University of its "higher trusted status" before the start of the academic year. The Guardian understands that London Met, which sponsors the students and issues degrees on behalf of the film school, also has hundreds of international students who are unable to get home due to lengthy delays at the Border Agency, despite being promised a fast-track service. Education vice-president at London Met, Syed Rumman, said he believed around 600-700 Met Uni students were stuck because UKBA still had their passports. After a petition by the film students, t...

Fulham boss Jol: We have big midfield problems ahead of Liverpool trip

After a bright start to the current campaign, the west London side have recorded only one win from nine Premier League games, and slumped to a disappointing loss against QPR last weekend. However, despite the absence of players such as Mahamadou Diarra, Bryan Ruiz, Steve Davies and Steve Sidwell through injury and supension, Jol still believes his team can trouble Brendan Rodgers' side. "We have got a problem in midfield, everyone can see that," he told reporters. "We need the points and we need the players. Hopefully next week my better players are back, Diarra and Bryan Ruiz, before that we have to try and get a result against Liverpool. "We were looking fine but we always knew the reality of life - if you would have told me in July that five of my best players in midfield are missing I would worry."   Jol admits he needs to find a remedy for the club's poor performances while taking into consideration how he can build a strong midfield, despite ...
