Internet Explorer issue 'fixed', say Microsoft

The software patch, which was released last night, has closed a loophole that has seen the computers of at least two million users hacked by cyber criminals. The problem related to a “zero day” flaw that tricked people into visiting an infected website, enabling hackers to gain access to online banking passwords and e-shopping logon details. “Microsoft has released a security update for Internet Explorer that will help protect its customers from malicious attacks,” said the company in a statement. “Like a vaccine developed to fight a virus, this ‘security update’ will protect computers only if it is installed.” Computers that are set to automatically update and install software will already be protected by the patch. Those users who manage their own updates are advised to download the fix as soon as possible from the Microsoft website . “When the patch is released, people should run, not walk, to get it installed,” said Paul Ferguson, a researcher with Trend Micro. “This vulnerability

Developed by Live Labs, Seadragon Mobile is the first in a number of planned Microsoft iPhone applications. Although Apple and Microsoft are market rivals, the firm chose the iPhone ahead of other mobile devices because of the phones popularity and graphical capabilities. Talking to Todd Bishop's Microsoft Blog, Alex Daley, group product manager for Microsoft Live Lab said the iPhone was the obvious mobile choice for Seadragon. "The iPhone is the most widely distributed phone with a (graphics processing unit)," said Mr Daley. "Most phones out today don't have accelerated graphics in them. HD DVD RIP 2006-2008

Toshiba announces HD DVD surrenderThe two-year war between HD DVD and Blu-ray officially ended Tuesday morning as Toshiba waved the white flag and declared it would stop producing HD DVD products. The company, which began sales of HD DVD in March 2006 with the HD-A1 player, "decided it was not right for us to keep going with such a small presence," said chief executive Atsutoshi Nishida. The Blu-ray format is now the definitive winner in the war and stands unopposed as the optical media replacement for DVD. Toshiba's news release goes into a bit more detail: "Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. Gmail introduce SMS chat

The feature is available only in the United States for now. To use it, people must first enable it through Gmail Labs, then they can initiate SMS-based instant message chats by typing in a phone number in the chat box on the left of the Gmail page. People who receive SMS messages from the service will get a return phone number from the 406 area code, which Dirac was happy to point out spells G0. Each pairing uses a unique phone number, so a person receiving messages can store a the 406 phone number on his or her phone for future use to communicate with that specific person. Tactfully, Dirac also observes that sending SMS messages from Gmail might be costing your buddies money, so be judicious. (Technewsworld.com)
